Program year three: September 2017- September 2018

When ECA and TDT decided to gather their forces and resources in help of Marumba village, two main issues were pointed out:

1. The program had to correspond to the real needs as expressed by the local community
2. A solid timing in implementing the different realisations was a priority so to make, in the right sequence, the right number of intervention having in mind the final program’s aim

Primary school phase three: solar power to the primary school

Lifting pupils and teachers out of darkness corresponded to a real need of the local population. Classrooms and teachers’ room needed to be powered.

The same company, which installed the solar panels to the dispensary, offered these works and eu can aid! and TDT financed the installation with the global cost of 4,800 €

The generous donation of Solar Solidarity International asbl of 2,880 € contributed to fund this project.

Strengthening the local environment

During our visit in 2015 and TDT’s one in 2017, the speedy implementation and the good use of the previously funded projects were evident. In addition, people started to clean up the village (in line with the wish of Tanzania President of the Republic) and the consciousness of the importance of the local environment became slowly a concrete engagement.

In cooperation with our partner TDT, we provided 2,000 trees (avocado and mango trees) with the global cost of 2,875 €.

Pupils have planted and pruned the trees under the guidance of the teachers and the school set an environmental and health club of the pupils who will water the trees when there is not enough rain.

Trees planted at school are owned by the school community and the health committee owns those planted at the dispensary and those planted in public areas are owned by the village council.

In addition, 10 dustbins were provided to help people to collect rubbish and waste. They are owned by the school, the hospital and the local government.

Improving and consolidating beekeepers skills

In the past, beekeeping was carried out by many families in the forest surrounding Marumba Village. Although it is a traditional and indigenous activity, its improvement to raise more income to poor families was requested by beekeepers, as there are many nectar yielding tree species in the natural forest.

A group of 30 beneficiaries was selected and divided into two sub-groups of 15 people each.

They benefited in total of 70 hives and 6 suits, which are used by rotating visits to the installation.

While the project started with 30 beneficiaries, a multiplying effect is foreseen: after each production, new beekeepers will get some litres of honey to be sold on the local market and, by setting a new group, will start their own beekeeping activity.

Our report

We visited Marumba in October 2018.

All projects realized so far are operational, are well kept and highly appreciated by all. The recently planted trees are fences by the pupils who take care and water them.
The solar panels are working well for the dispensary and the primary school as well as the teachers houses. The government has recently provided a fridge for vaccinations operated with the solar power. The new classrooms are in very good condition so are the constructed toilets and the water tanks. The borehole provides good drinking water in sufficient quantity The village was reasonably proper.
