The project concerns the construction of a unit for processing cassava into gari (flour) for a group of 48 vulnerable women. The project will indirectly benefit approximately 245 family members as well as cassava producers. The processing unit will include a workshop, a storage store and processing equipment. This will multiply production by 5. The raw material is available, and a market exists for marketing. A management committee will ensure the management and the equipment’s maintenance.

Project: Cranberry culture

The NGO N-CARE (Nature-Care) has asked to fund its project to develop cranberry culture for 448 women who have returned to their home communities after having to flee armed conflicts. The development of this crop, which is expected to increase production by 50%, will be based on training for production and marketing, particularly in workshops and demonstration farms, as well as monitoring every three months. There are also plans to include vegetables in the value chain.

This is the third part of a three year project. The first was construction of an orphanage and was completed in 2020, the second funded the equipment, furniture and energy and was successfully completed in 2021. This last year’s project aimed at improving children nutrition and health by creating fish farming which involved the digging of 6 ponds, the supply of water and the acquisition of a freezer for harvested fish.

The Kenyan Riley Orton Foundation (ROF) has asked to fund the installation of a solar pump for a well that has already been drilled and its water quality has been verified. The French NGO ESF (Electriciens sans Frontières) wanted to launch in Madagascar a solar electrification program for 6 schools and 2 health centers, divided into three villages without electricity. The beneficiaries would be 1722 children for primary schools, colleges, and high schools and 19,980 inhabitants for health centers. The total budget amounted to about 135,000 EUR plus about 60,000 for a part of the equipment (valorization of donations from French companies). We contributed to the program for the electrification of two health centres.

NGO: A Joy group
Project: Toilet facilities for girls in school

The A Joy school was set up by a group of teachers and registered in 2017. It currently provides care and education for about 150 children a year. The school has 6 classrooms, a kitchen and a vegetable garden, toilets and a borehole. Due to an initial lack of funding the current toilet block has only a hard board separation between the boys and girls side, not offering sufficient privacy for the girls. The school is requesting funding for a second toilet block (4 cabins) with a small changing room for the (older) girls and for a permanent hand washing station where 10 to 15 children can wash their hands at once.

The NGO BIDII (Benevolent Institute of Development Initiatives in Tanzania) has requested funding to set a pig farming in help of 80 women (including widows and very young mothers). Each woman will receive one female and return 2 pigs to the NGO to allow the extension of the project to new beneficiaries. After training, the NGO will provide veterinary treatment. Different marketing strategies have been planned in the face of increasing demand.

Project: Permaculture market gardening

The Togolese association PERJAT (PERma-jardins du Togo) has asked to finance a project of market gardening in permaculture to give food security and income-generating activity to 50 women in difficult situations (widows, abandoned or mothers-daughters). This project will also benefit their children (300). This activity is expected to triple their monthly income. The funding requested is mainly for a water-efficient irrigation system. This activity will also reduce deforestation, as these women mainly live from the manufacture of charcoal.

Project: Drinkable water access

NGO PRODIDA-PROISDA asked to finance the drinking water equipment of a village to improve the sanitary situation and avoid long distances on foot to obtain drinking water. The well will be equipped with an electric pump because of the great depth of the water table. The maintenance will be financed by contributions from recipient households. It was the Committee’s view that water’s conditions should be assured before financing the pump and generator. The project has been paid in two instalments: 1) drilling to verify the water condition and 2) pump and generator.

The project involves water and sanitation improvements to a primary school in Kasugu community. It is planned to last 12 months and includes the construction of a borehole to provide the school and the community with adequate and clean water, a 5-stance VIP-pit latrine at the primary school, construct 2 multiple hand-washing stations, facilitate the formation of a school WASH club, water user committee and promotion among both the community and school population to adopt good hygiene practices in order to address the sanitation and health problems.

The income of the beneficiaries could increase by up to 83%.

YAWE foundation is dedicated to helping and working to empower the HIV positive youth and which has suffered the worst experiences of HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination right from their families of origin.
The project for which they are seeking support is to equip Welding and Carpentry Training Workshops at the Centre for Vocational Skills and train some twenty students annually. YAWE also participates in identifying potential employers and recommending graduates to them.

This NGO was founded by academics who wanted to help their home communities. The source will be protected to avoid animal pollution. The infrastructure will be managed by a committee and financed by minimal fees. It will benefit nearly 65 households, or nearly 520 people.

The NGO AWEI (Alpha Women Empowerment Initiative) was looking for funding to improve upland rice farming instead of rice fields, which requires less water. The budget requested concerns the granting of tarpaulins to cover the fields and bags for storage. Marketing meetings will also be held, with improved rice selling more than twice as much.

The project consists in the installation of solar panels in a school in a village in Tamil Nadu, populated by Dalit and tribal people. This facility would solve the problems of power supply, which is affected by frequent power cuts. The current power supply is also insufficient for the use of computers. The installation, including a storage battery, would allow to invest in the school the sums thus saved for the consumption of electricity. It would also serve as a model for other schools in the district.

The project involves the manufacturing of cement blocks. 30 poor landless women will be selected – 20 women will form a Self-Help group and will be permanently involved in cement block making, while 10 women will be kept on the waiting list in case someone leaves the project due to unavoidable circumstances. Currently the women work only approximately 4 months a year as agricultural labour and do not have regular income for the rest of the year. The women who will join the cement block unit, will be fully involved, and will not have to do the seasonal agricultural jobs anymore.

The Belgian NGO Belgian Overseas Support has asked to finance the installation of solar panels in a center for Syrian refugees in Lebanon, in a mountain town near the Syrian border. They should provide electricity for all 312 students. Proper heating is also planned due to the harsh winter. In case refugees are repatriated later, the equipment will be handed over to the local public school. A possible impact of the financing of international institution being not realistic, the Committee expresses its agreement in funding this project with exclusion of heating and fuel costs.

The proposed project aims at upgrading the Rimsha Masih Community School. Project: Improving rice production

TFD (Together for Development) was seeking funds for improving the rice yields. The beneficiaries will be 30 women of a Self-Help Group. The improvement will be made by using the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) technology. SRI method requires less water, which enables rice cultivation more than once in a year. SRI also improves soil conditions, its resilience to weeds and pests, saves farming cost and increases rice yields and higher grades of rice. TFD identified new markets due to their frequent and high demand for locally produced rice. They will also prepare a unique, cost effective, well labelled, and environmentally friendly packages or bags for the storage and sale of the rice.

Operation and maintenance of the new shallow will be managed by elected people from the community, some of them trained for technical maintenance.

The project consists in the complete renovation of the school: the old school will be razed, and the new construction of classrooms is requested; latrines were not planned. Following Eu Can Aid’s remark on the need for working latrines, the requestor amended the application. Two classes will be built and the latrines rehabilitated.

Louvain Coopération (which operates in partnership with RAFIA, TOGO) has asked to finance the valorization of rice balls through the production of briquettes and biochar for drying the rice. These 120 women are grouped into 8 cooperatives. Biocharbon and water from the steaming of rice will help fertilizing the ecological market gardening site.

On the suggestion of a reference who visits this NGO each year, the promoter was invited to look for cheaper beds while still meeting the needs, which allowed to reduce the fund requested that also covers the corresponding mattresses.

The NGO CCUg (Community Concerns Uganda) was looking for funds to build toilets in two primary schools. The latrines will be equipped with washbasins. The project is based on a comprehensive school approach with health committees in both schools. This will help prevent covid-19. Sanitary clubs will also be reinforced, in particular by the production of soap bars. The water will come from springs and a reservoir collecting rainwater from the roof.

Moreover, the rainwater harvesting system is needed because children now must walk 3 km a day to collect water, which affects their concentration for studies and leads to poor academic performance, in addition to the fact that girls can be raped on the way.

In a 12-month period 31women will benefit of it and all the 31 are given training and education initially. There is a high demand for those products which give good revenue.

The Indian NGO IRDRP (Institute of Research and Development for the Rural Poor) was seeking funds to set up a training in sustainable agriculture for 200 small and landless farmers belonging to the Dalit community. It is focused on black rice with a high nutritional value and a high demand. This rice would triple income per acre by savings on chemical inputs and by the much higher price of this kind of rice. The project would provide training sessions and loans to 20 landless families to set up a micro enterprise in support of organic farming. With the repaid loans further families will be supported.

Repta received funding for the drilling of a well in a primary school. This well will give clean water to drink whereas the pupils are now obliged to fetch water in a pond. A management committee supervised by the association of parents will ensure the maintenance of a manual pump with little fees to be paid by the consumers. This will benefit directly to 690 pupils and the 10 teachers as well as indirectly to the 3000 inhabitants of the village.

As a second step, the orphanage will be equipped and powered by solar panels.

The NGO VAO (Vulnerable Aid Organization) received funding for the construction of a borehole to serve the primary school and the village. This borehole will be operated by a hand pump. There will be approximately 850 inhabitants benefiting from the project, of which 279 attend the primary school. Monitoring and management will also involve a committee from the community. Each household will contribute to the maintenance.

The Megabridge Foundation received funds for a project of goat purchase and sustainable breeding. 100 goats will be purchased and distributed to 100 women who are single mothers, without income. Goats will be kept individually to ensure personalized ownership but will be administered in a cooperative manner to create a strong social support for the women. The expected outcomes: reproduction and sales, increased nutrition from meat and milk, improved soil from manure fertilization, sense of empowerment from having an ownership.

Project: Solar streetlamps

The French NGO TANAA was given funds for the installation of three solar streetlamps in a village of more than one hundred families. Those lamps will allow to work in vegetables gardens during the evening and night avoiding working during very hot days. A management committee, together with the women of the village, will collect fees for the maintenance of the equipment. The French NGO will also install a solar pump which will fill a water tank.

YWISD (Youth and Women Initiative for Sustainable Development) received funding for a project to train 40 disadvantaged women (single mothers) to grow bananas and coffee. Additionally, the project includes a demonstration garden with nursery beds for the coffee and banana plants for permanent usage beyond the duration of the project. The banana production will improve the provision of food in the area whereas the coffee will be exported bringing income to the region. 200 people are expected to benefit later in the project.

The NGO SRCDO (Snow Rural Development Organisation) received funds for the development of training in the production of soya beans with a view to raising the production and thus doubling the revenues. KaGPWD (Karambi Group of People with Disabilities) received funds to drill two boreholes in two villages for drinking water and irrigation. Currently it takes 3 km to walk to the drinking water source and irrigation is due in the dry season. The boreholes will benefit over 4.000 beneficiaries which rely on agriculture as a main source of income. It will also allow to double the crop production. The long-term sustainability will be monitored by a Committee of Water Users which will collect fees in each village.

The local community will provide the labor for both construction and maintenance of the boreholes. A water use committee will be established. It is Committee’s opinion that references reliability should be further investigated.

They are aimed at preventing them from indebtedness towards illegal lenders with rates of 60% and bricks manufacturers who pay the debts and oblige the women to work in remote factories for reimbursement as bonded workers. The targeted persons should get also field for themselves. They will be provided with hoes and machetes, seeds and some clothes, as well as consultations.

According to the applicant, the current water supply situation in these villages is very poor causing many problems on health, absenteeism at school, dangers related to long water hauling trips notably for girls
The beneficiaries of the project are all pupils and personnel of these schools. The project proposal is to construct two 25 000 l rainwater cisterns, one construction per school. According to WPS, the annual raining season is up to nine months, the same period as the school year. The capacity of these water tanks should be enough to supply the schools with sufficient water service.

The Halo Trust started in August 2013 a demining operation on both sides of the border between Zimbabwe and Mozambique. A groundwater investigation has taken place and four sites have been analysed. As a matter of priority the first identified borehole is funded.

In November 2013 a typhoon of unprecedented scale ravaged the Philippines, causing massive destruction and hundreds of deaths, with dramatic social and economic consequences. In cooperation with EC Central Staff Committee, ECA launched a call on colleagues’ solidarity to provide, after the emergency aids, rehabilitation and reconstruction. The collected amount will be allocated to the projects that, in the meantime, ECA has received.
This project concerns St Therese Educational Foundation in Tacloban. The school is today renovated thanks to a pool of private donors organised by Ms van Ypersele, applicant of the present project. But the roof of the administration building is still in very bad condition and needs to be entirely renovated.

CERFAK (technical operator of CODEART) is requesting an electricity generator powered by palm oil, to develop workers activities. It will be a kind of prototype (not yet introduced into the market). In the mid-term the workers will be trained to adapt diesel engines to this vegetal fuel.
A traditional engine will be bought and adapted in Belgium and sent to Kilwit where it will be installed. ECA’s contribution amounts to € 5,000 (total cost is of € 10,500).

Due to the war that took place in the East of DR of Congo, the lack of schooling and education grow among the children of the area. In 2006 parents from the surroundings of Baraka created a primary school for those children refused in other schools because of the lack of place for them. A year later, the Institute ‘Charité’ was created. Currently 510 pupils have insufficient classrooms for a proper education and the school needs some help for the improvement of the learning conditions of the students and their education. The construction of 4 new classrooms is requested. The construction has been started thanks to the pupils’ parents who raised part of the money but € 3,500.00 are still needed to finish the work.

In Korogocho (Nairobi) sanitary facilities are in the form of pit latrines, The plastic bags used as containers are thrown anywhere outside; villagers along the river that borders Korogocho use the river and the strips of land alongside it for refuse disposal. Therefore the problem of access to decent, clean toilets presents a health challenge to the local residents.
The association partner AE aims building a total of 200 toilets. To date, 105 toilets have been built. ECA finances four toilets.

The association has already received help from ETM for creating a milk production. The new project submitted aims at improving the productivity by preparing as well other dairy products such as yoghurt and cheese. Our partner association COAGRO wants to help 30 women from the community of Tupigachi, who live in very poor conditions, to develop the production of cheese and yoghurt from the milk of their cows. This would enable them to adapt the existing small dairy and buy the equipment needed to make and sell their products. This project would allow the women to add much more value to the milk from their cows and thereby increase their families’ incomes.

Collique inhabitants have hardly any access to clean water. The only water source is a weak spring located in the village. Hills in the neighbourhood are their only toilet, which generates big pollution problems.
LAGWA wants to install 25 dry toilets to help 25 families to improve their hygiene. 3 wash basins will be also set up. In a second phase, LAGWA plans to install some shower cabins. Labour will be provided by LAGWA and € 5,000 is requested from ECA to cover the installation costs.

The budget includes the set-up of the coir training unit, the installation of 20 coir making machines at the Jodichinthala (Andhra Pradesh) training center. These water points were fed by rain water which dried up in hot summer months. Working with other donors, ECA helped fund a project to construct 4 wells equipped with solar pumps and to educate the local population on best practices for transporting and storing water.

For many women in Benin, finding employment that is regular and secure can be a challenge. Two more classes in the school
Planned construction of two classrooms on land belonging to the Misasa communal school. This is a new build, including landscaping, digging the foundations, building, and roofing, finishing works and providing basic classroom equipment. At its meeting of 28 July 2011, the Committee decided to commit the sum of € 8,000, subject to the requester mobilising additional resources, in order to guarantee the total budget would be financed. The Dutch NGO ‘Winka’ (€6 000) and Cordaid (€ 14,600) supplied the necessary guarantees.

Fighting preventable diseases
In the Mbouka area of Cameroun, cholera has begun to spread among poor families largely as a result of no access to safe, clean drinking water. ECA therefore helped fund not only the construction of a well and water access points for the community but also training for community members to enable them to maintain the facilities.

Training for marginalized women
Building on the great work already started by an NGO based in Douala, Cameroun, ECA helped extend a vocational training centre providing young marginalised women with training in sewing and an opportunity to start their own business. ECA’s funding also helped build a sales centre to sell the products produced with profits generated being ploughed back into the training centre.

Of the medical students in DRC, many study in schools located outside of the big cities and close to rural communities. These schools often lack study materials and in particular up-to-date medical text books. ECA supported a scheme to help stock the libraries of these schools ensuring trainee medical staff are kept abreast of the latest medical techniques.

Strengthening thehealth care service
This project consists of enhancing the surgical department by refurbishing the operating suite, buying equipment and skill transfer activities to improve the quality and level of care, thereby boosting the hospital’s activities. Through this project, the MAHU hopes to enhance a department which exists, but which is not developed enough to care for patients properly.

Empowering the income generation
The project consists of installing three mills for manioc and maize in three villages in the Boko sector in the province of Bas Congo. The income generated from selling the flour made will boost the inhabitants’ incomes, ease their workload and teach them how to manage a collective asset. The applicant will contribute some of the financing. The amount requested from the ECA was € 4,745. As the project can be divided into modules (three different installations), it can be co-financed by other donors (e.g. the AST Network).

Fighting malnutrition and poverty
To help in the fight against malnutrition and poverty that affects so many living in the developing world, ECA supported a project in the district of Kinguba, RDC aimed at providing chickens to 45 beneficiaries. Through farming poultry, the beneficiaries and their families are able to increase their intake of eggs and poultry. Any surplus eggs and meat products can be sold in the local market to supplement the beneficiaries’ income.

Installing a water source
The district of Kalonge in RDC is home to some 110,000 inhabitants. Water-bourne diseases among the population are now at such a high level that according to the general hospital in Kalonge, such diseases are the second biggest cause of death after malaria. To help encourage safe hygiene practices, ECA supported a project aimed at educating the local population in such practices and constructing 1 new water source.

Bringing communities together
For many rural farming communities living around the Mpanda river in RDC, the destruction of a bridge over the river meant that they were left isolated from key centres to sell and trade their produce, and to access hospitals and schools. ECA helped fund the reconstruction of the bridge.

Supporting vulnerable women and children affected by HIV
Since the late 1990s, many communities living in South Kivu, RDC have been subjected to unimaginable violence and war and suffered with the spread of HIV/AIDS and poverty. To help support the most vulnerable, ECA provided funding to train 15 orphans and 5 women, all living with HIV, in agricultural techniques and goat breeding. Further, the beneficiaries were provided with seeds, tools and livestock enabling them to increase their income and improve their quality of life.

Helping to secure employment for single mothers
One of ECA’s members introduced ECA to an NGO in Ethiopia that had trained and employed 48 single mothers to produce ceramics and embroidery products to sell to a busy tourist market. To help ensure the centre was able to continue employing the 48 beneficiaries and provide training to other single mothers, ECA helped fund the purchase of a grinding and ball mill thereby helping to increase the number and quality of ceramics produced by the centre.

This concerns the provision of school furniture for the Lyma Children’s Education Centre, a private school run on a voluntary basis. Ensuring food security for the most vulnerable
ECA fully supports the idea of providing rural communities living below the poverty line with training, tools and equipment in order that they may grow their own food. In this project, ECA supported a group of 30 women and their families by providing funding for a project aimed at training the women in vegetable gardening and providing them with seeds, tools and equipment to be able to grow their own produce.

A safe and clean school
This project concerned the collection of rain water from the roofs of 6 classrooms into two tanks, to use for cleaning the classrooms and sanitary facilities. Two tanks of 500 litres each will be built. The amount requested includes the purchase of the materials required for building and installing the tanks. The local community will also contribute. The promoter is known to the ECA as a past recipient of aid.

Reduce themortality rate amongstreet children
The promoter requests ECA support for buying solar panels for the dispensary in the village of Mtegowanoty. The panels will allow the consultation and treatment rooms to be lit at night, reducing the mortality rate of children and their mothers and also improve the storage of medication.

In this project, ECA helps tackle the issue of youth unemployment within a rural community close to Kigoma, Tanzania. Building a school
Every child deserves the opportunity to gain a basic education. In this project, ECA provided funding for a project to build, equip and maintain a school on the island of Omepete, Nicaragua. A worthy future for 50 young girls
The project aims to provide training in sewing and embroidery for 50 young girls and women from different villages around the town of Kurnool. An awareness-raising programme will be hosted in each village to recruit participants. The 6-month training course held twice a year for two groups will include accommodation, food and literacy training in the evenings. After the course, the graduates will receive coaching from businesses to help them to start their own business.
The request concerns the provision of sewing machines, material and related supplies.

The reception centre for 25 young boys, built in October 2010, is part-funded by the local government (food, clothes, health care, and teachers’ salaries). In 2011 a second story was added to cope with growing demand.

Vocational training for young girls
As a result of financial and/or cultural reasons many young girls in India are uneducated, and thereby struggle to earn a living later in life. In this project, ECA provided funding to help increase employment opportunities for 50 such marginalized young girls aged between 14 – 18 years living in the Kadapa District, Andhra Pradesh. The project offers the girls training in hand embroidery as well as help and assistance to start their own business at the end of the training. Further, some of the proceeds from the sale of products produced will go towards training more beneficiaries.

Combating tropical diseases.
The project concerns the creation of an emergency medical centre open 24/7 for street children in the Lazimpat region. The centre will provide emergency treatment for tropical diseases and problems linked to malnutrition.
